Burger Babies has opened this week in the old Tacone spot on King St. Carly and I ventured over there today for lunch and we were muy impressed. Firstly, the decor is modern, sustainable, easy. The pricing might be a little expensive, but the food and flavors are worth it. I enjoyed a portobello mushroom cap burger (regular bun) and fries. Carly had a shrimp tempura sammy on a steamed bun. The menu is simple, with fresh ingredients and everything tasted delightful. Most importantly, and similar to WOK’s model, they serve your food in biodegradable to-go boxes, so no fuss with baskets and paper; and the food is fast. The fries are good, but if you’re debating on a burger and fries or two burgers, spring for the two burgers. Here are a few snapshots for your mouth-watering pleasure:

The Boeing manufacturing plant (coming soon to North Charleston) will cover its ten acre roof in solar panels, which will power the entire local site. This is an awesome move and we’re so happy that it was announced during Earth Week!
Lend a Hand for Japan is the South Carolina Aquarium’s fundraiser to help raise money for the aquariums and zoos affected by the earthquake and tsunami. They will also be donating to the American Red Cross. The fare will consist of favorite local restaurants including Home Team BBQ, Wasabi, Triangle, Tristan, Tommy Condon’s and many more! There is a minimum donation of $40 to get in, but all food and beverages are included. You can also view all the aquarium’s exhibits.
Festivities begin at 7pm and last until 10pm. It’s a great cause and it is sure to be lots of fun!

Am I the only one that is lamenting the “reinvention” of Chai’s?! I’m not a sweets person, but I am a fan of dark, loungey places that serve seared scallops, BBQ tacos, rock shrimp, ceviche and that amazing tuna crustini. Which brings me to my next point: I need a sponsor, or at the very least, a support group. I hate everything about the new Chai’s, minus their insanely comfortable outdoor furniture. No more happy hour? Who are we kidding. The place was an institution and it has been bastardized! Okay, so now I’m being melodramatic, but it is still sad to see the tapas and $5 Malbec leave the place I once loved on Upper King, only to be replaced by a few tarts and cakes.
I went to Prince last night at the North Charleston Coliseum. I was ready to see the man, the myth, the legend and be blown away. I thought for sure that I would recognize all the radio hits and sway along to the ones I didn’t know. I thought he would have a few wardrobe changes and flashy dancers. Boy, had I really underestimated the Welcome 2 America show.
Before entering the stage, Prince came over the mic and said “Ladies and gentlemen. If you have a cell phone, hold it up. Call your next of kin ’cause you’re about to witness a miracle.” It really set the mood. We were all struggling to pay attention to the talented, but not arena-ready Lalah Hathaway, daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway. We all sat in anticipation as the lights went up for a few minutes and then went down. He immediately began playing “Let’s Go Crazy,” and we happily obliged.
The moments before the intro to the song were the last I was still. There was no time to breathe, eat, drink or do anything but dance. The crowd exploded when they heard the first few notes of “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” and Prince happily exclaimed “Oh yeah, you didn’t think we were gonna play this shit!” MJ would’ve been proud. The only other cover of the night was “Misty Blue,” sung by the incomparable Shelby Jay, while Prince changed into his gold sequin bellbottoms. The high energy, I can say, was astounding. Prince was doing ballet type twirls, insanely awesome hand motions, ROCKING on the guitar and dancing his ass off. I’m sore today and I was just dancing in a 2×2 space. How does he do it (and at his age)?
His encore lasted for at least 30 minutes, meshing together newer songs with favorites like “Kiss” and “When the Doves Cry.” Purple confetti shot from cannons as he belted the last few notes of “Purple Rain.” I was insanely sad when it was over but so happy I got the chance to witness it.
The home of the best damn steak burrito in town is coming to Mt. Pleasant, and not a moment too soon. Juanita’s will be located next to Andolini’s at 410 West Coleman Blvd.
The menu will be the same and the mahi tacos will still be amazing. The soft opening is set for April 5th, so go on over and grab a Dos Equis and do your best Most Interesting Man in the World impression.
Our friends at King Street Chic were lucky to steal a minute with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant over the weekend at Charleston Fashion Week. Here it is:
In related news, the AMC drama will not be back on the air until early 2012, and we’re depressed.
